Oh my gosh! I'm having a fangirl moment. I just stumbled across some behind-the-scenes photos from Holiday (1938) - the film that may be the closest of all to my heart. I simply love that film. (It occurs to me I haven't reviewed it yet - more on that later). This photoset shows Cary Grant and Doris Nolan playing in the snow in what the caption says is "on the set" of Holiday. Now if that is correct, it means they shot an outdoor scene in the snow that never made it into the film's final cut. The scene can only be the "meet cute" where Julia (Nolan) encounters Johnny (Grant) on her way to the ice-skating rink at Lake Placid:
I stopped him and I said, "Pardon me, I don't think you realise it but your nose is frozen." And he said, "Thanks, I don't suppose there's anything you personally can do about it."
And if that's true, there is a whole adorable scene from this film I'll never see! I'm now going to shed a few tears for all the scenes from beloved Old Hollywood films that ended up on the cutting room floor. Unlike today, an age of endless DVD extras of deleted scenes and blooper reels, these cut scenes are most likely gone forever. What a terrible loss...
Anyway, musings aside, here they are.
